Funny thing about kids
- they'll believe just about anything. When Melissa was a kid, her
parents died in a grisly murder-suicide. Her stepparents told her
it was her fault; that she might be crazy, and that she wasn't entitled
to anything in this world.
As a "grown-up" she
remembered the big lessons, the ones she learned as a kid. What Melissa
learned brought her a 20-year relationship with a man who she could
not rely on physically, emotionally or psychologically. He gave her
two kids, a mortgage, and eventually a suicide note of his own.
At 36, Melissa's true
education began. She worked through eight years of intensive psychotherapy,
learned about her own strengths, and to identify love in the world
and seek it out. Today she has two amazing children, a loving and
supportive husband, and countless articles, books, and TV appearances.
The path she walked gave her the ability to connect with everyone
who has ever truly lived, and the ability to reach laughter through
tears.
It all ties back to
something her father told her at age six, just before he died: Everything
is going to be all right.
It's funny what kids
will believe.
